July 4, 2022 by Marita Overfelt

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot confirmed to the New York Times that the Chicago Police Department is assisting in the response and investigation.

“Law enforcement is working hard to bring the shooter into custody,” Lightfoot said.

Other communities canceled their own July 4th activities in the wake of the deadly shooting, including Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Deerfield, Glencoe, Glenview, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Morton Grove, Mount Prospect, Northbrook, Northfield, Oak Park, Skokie, Vernon Hills, and Winnetka.

Evanston also canceled celebrations and announced all beaches in the near north suburbs will be closed for the rest of today.

Meanwhile, elected officials are beginning to weigh in on social media.
